After reading some of the diaries I notice references to something called sandbagging.  Visually so far I have seen a pic in the diary of ShootingFor6 with sandbags on top of his leg braces.

Assuming a double cut procedure,
Question 1: What is the purpose of sandbagging when the leg braces (ilizarov devices) are on?
Question 2: What is the purpose of sandbagging post-op, when only the internal braces are present?

My rationale so far is that the new bone formation in the femur is so soft we actually see the femur bending.  But the internal braces/nails are supposed to prevent that. . .

They are referenced in my diary, and Mysteryman's diary too.

The purpose of sandbagging is to straighten a leg that has flexum problems (inability for the muscles and tendons to straighten) due to over-lengthening or lengthening too fast.

Soft tissues grow more slowly than bone, so when people lengthen the bone too fast, it leads to this problem.

Question 2: What is the purpose of sandbagging post-op, when only the internal braces are present?

Exactly the same as in the previous answer.

I have no idea what that sentence is meant to mean? I think that you confused yourself. Bones cannot bend, especially when they have metal inside them!

Please read the FAQs and diaries - this is covered extensively.

I always thought the soft tissue will stretch out via exercise/traditional stretch methods (such as sitting and reaching for your toes).  Then again, with the pins in your ankle and whatnot it's probably not possible (though I see springs. . ).

Scoured the entire length of the FAQ section (and used ctrl+F) as well as global searched this site with the keyword "sandbag" and it didn't turn up explicit explanations; I think the topic of sandbagging doesn't exist in the FAQ section.  Only reason I asked in this forum.

But thanks for the answer MMT, cleared up my major question.  =]

I just typed 'sandbag' into our search function and pulled-up a page of links, including this one:

http://www.makemetaller.info/index.php/topic,106.0.html - Sandbag Session with Wang Yana which includes photos and a lot of detail - I'm not sure how you missed that Smiley

whoah. . .

It seems there's 2 search options on this site ("SEARCH" next to Home and Help on the left and a Google Custom Search on the right). .  The latter was much more conspicuous.

Honest mistake, sorry for clogging up the forums.

p. s.  feel free to kill this thread  :P
